The BRIT School is the UK’s leading Performing and Creative Arts School.   Pentir have worked with the school over a ten-year period and have appointed the Principal and all senior leaders. 

Most recently, we were asked to support the appointment of the new COO.  Appointing to these types of roles is difficult and it is important to clarify the role and the priorities.   This helps to define the skills, qualities and expertise.  There was a significant debate about whether it was necessary to be a qualified accountant albeit that this was a very broad strategic and operational role.  There were further discussions around the flexible working arrangements around the role.  This would allow for a broadening of the field.  It was clear that the role would be an attractive one, but the breadth of skills needed to work with Trustees and partners would be difficult to find. 

The Trustees were open-minded on whether candidates came from the education sector or from outside.  Many questioned whether the skills sought existed in the schools/academies sector.   It was also important to ensure that any senior leader understood the importance of inclusion and diversity.   

The role was advertised nationally and Pentir actively headhunted a small number of talented individuals who were well-qualified for the role.  Those from outside of the sector needed persuading that it was worthwhile applying.   We carried out preliminary interviews which allowed us to explore the expertise of a broader range of candidates.  A strong field of qualified candidates were identified and Pentir attended and supported the assessment day and final interview.
