ELAM is a world-class 16-19 Academy which opened in September 2014. ELAM offers young people everything that they will need to build successful careers within the music, games design and film sectors.
We are working to build more valuable, diverse and sustainable creative industries. For this to be true, young people of all backgrounds should have access to a rigorous, informed and connected creative education. At ELAM we do this in full partnership with the some of the UK’s largest creative companies and are proud to deliver a best-in-class, well rounded education for our young people.
The creative industries in the UK are growing at twice the speed of the wider economy. However, unlike other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs. The knowledge, skills and behaviours of success are often ill-defined, and the access points can be elusive. Consequently, we see a lack of diversity across the creative industries - just 4% of London’s TV and Film industry are from a black, asian or other minority background.
ELAM’s Music, Games Design and Film courses are co-designed with industry and develop high levels of real-world readiness in Trainees. We have partnered with sector leading organisations including YouTube, Universal Music Group and Creative Assembly to design and deliver a curriculum capable of developing tomorrow’s creative workforce. In addition, all trainees at ELAM undertake a study of Maths and English.
Where are we now?
ELAM is now at capacity with 300 full-time trainees on roll and is oversubscribed for each new cohort of 150. It has world-class facilities that include six industry standard live rooms and two control rooms, a BRIT Trust 500 capacity theatre, 360 degree green screen, a YouTube Innovation Lab, motion capture studios, games development labs, film editing suites, 250 seat cinema and an art gallery.
Moreover, ELAM has an exceptional staff that live out our values through their ambitious, detail orientated, hard working and fun approach to their work.
At its first full Ofsted inspection in May 2017 ELAM was graded Outstanding in every category.
Objectively, ELAM is in a fantastic place and has the resources, staff and reputation to continue to excel. Yet, despite this platform, we know that ELAM still has some distance to travel until it is meeting our vision.
Where are we going next?
ELAM does not yet prove to be transformative for every Trainee that it works with. Whilst very few leave without a clear destination, our ambition is to ensure that ALL trainees go onto realise their fullest potential in leading industry entry-positions or start / complete the best university courses.
And whilst our relationship with industry has been exceptional to-date, ELAM needs to prove its value year-on-year to strengthen the support and attention from industry that make it so special.
We cannot underplay the scale of both of these challenges, nor our ambition that ELAM be a truly world class institution at the 16-19 phase. When it works it looks like film, games and music like this.
Our future leader will be given the license to set a bold vision for ELAM and execute on it. Clearly there is much to celebrate and hold onto, however we don’t seek leadership that is only prepared to consolidate or slowly iterate the existing model. Outwardly they will be the face and voice of ELAM, highly visible and credible across the creative industries and post-16 education. And inwardly they will lead ELAM’s staff to do their life’s best work and create a groundbreaking institution in the heart of East London.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to find out any more about the role or ELAM.
